LYLG Legal Mentor Scheme

Are you searching for a Training Contract, or do you want to help those that are?

LYLG appreciates that securing a Training Contract is incredibly difficult and can feel daunting at times. Our Legal Mentoring Scheme aims to offer individuals the opportunity to have an insight into the legal profession and to understand what life is like for a lawyer in practice. The Scheme is intended to help individuals develop the necessary skills and network to improve confidence throughout the different stages of the training contract process.

Application Process

Registration for the scheme is now open and we are looking for both mentors and mentees.

LYLG will try to match mentees with mentors whose background and experiences are similar to the mentees’ own career aspirations and will allocate mentors on a rolling basis.

LYLG cannot always guarantee that mentees will be matched with a mentor from a similar background due to fluctuating mentee and mentor numbers. However, all mentors will be able to provide advice based on their knowledge and experiences which is applicable across the legal industry and invaluable for the training contract application process.

Once LYLG has matched a mentor and mentee we will send an introductory email attaching our Guidance Sheet and encourage you to build your relationship organically in a way that works best for you.

Please note that due to demand we unfortunately cannot reassign mentees to a different mentor.

What will the LYLG Mentor Scheme involve?

Mentors will provide bespoke one-to-one assistance and advice at each stage of the training contract application and interview process. Mentors will also be able to draw on their own unique experiences to provide practical advice in respect of the type of firm which might be best suited to you and what to expect from life as a trainee. The relationship can also help to motivate and provide a source of comfort to many that are finding the application process challenging.

LYLG, with F-lex, will offer support with mock interviews and guidance on assessment centres and interview tips, as well as advice on how best to tackle application forms. This offering will aim to provide enhanced development for mentees on the LYLG Legal Mentoring Scheme.

Who can apply?

We are looking for mentors ranging from current trainees to 7 years PQE. There is no requirement that mentors be based in London.

Mentors are not required to be an LYLG member but will benefit from a 25% reduction in the cost of LYLG membership and will be invited to our monthly networking and educational events throughout the scheme.

To ensure that we are able to focus this year’s scheme on those with the greatest current need for support, we invite applications from those that have completed their first year of an LLB or second year of a non-qualifying undergraduate degree. We do not place any upper age or experience limit on those able to apply.

The scheme is not currently open.

Mentees must be an LYLG member to partake as a mentee in the Scheme. If you are not already an LYLG member, please Join Here.

Diversity and Inclusion

LYLG is committed to promoting diversity and inclusion across our platform as we recognise it is fundamental to ensure that the legal profession is accessible for all. We welcome and encourage individuals from all backgrounds to apply to the Mentor Scheme. We seek to create a real opportunity for aspiring lawyers to start forming strong legal connections and reduce societal barriers.
