Inspire and Be Inspired
LYLG Legal Mentor Scheme
2020 – 2021

Are you searching for a Training Contract, have just started your legal career or do you want to help those that are?

LYLG appreciates that securing a Training Contract and/or being in the early stages of your legal career is incredibly difficult and can feel daunting at times.

Our Legal Mentoring Scheme: Inspire or Be Inspired aims to offer individuals the opportunity to build an organic relationship with others in the legal profession. Mentees and mentors can work together by connecting and sharing experiences to tackle any problems mentees may be facing.

The Scheme is also intended to help individuals develop the necessary transferable skills and network to improve confidence throughout the training contract process and/or the early stages of your legal career.

 Application Process

Registration for the scheme will be open at various periods throughout the year and we are looking for both mentors and mentees.

LYLG will try to match mentees with mentors whose background and experiences are similar to the mentees’ own career aspirations and will allocate mentors on a rolling basis.

LYLG cannot always guarantee that mentees will be matched with a mentor from a similar background due to fluctuating mentee and mentor numbers. However, all mentors will be able to provide advice based on their knowledge and experiences which is applicable across the legal industry and invaluable for the early stages of your career.

Once LYLG has matched a mentor and mentee we will send an introductory email attaching our Mentoring Guidelines and encourage you to build your relationship organically in a way that works best for you.

Please note that due to demand we unfortunately cannot reassign mentees to a different mentor.

What will the LYLG Mentor Scheme involve?

Mentors will provide bespoke one-to-one assistance and advice to support you within your legal career.  Mentors will be able to draw on their own experiences to provide practical guidance to help answer any queries you may have about the graduate recruitment process and what to expect from life as a trainee or junior lawyer.

The relationship you build can also help to motivate and provide a source of comfort to many that experience actual or perceived barriers within the industry.

LYLG, with F-lex, will offer support through various events throughout the year so please follow our social media platforms and sign up to our mailing list to stay tuned.

Who can apply?

Mentors

We are looking for mentors ranging from future trainees to 7 years PQE. There is no requirement that mentors be based in London.

Mentors are not required to be an LYLG member but will benefit from a 25% reduction in the cost of LYLG membership and will be invited to our monthly networking and educational events throughout the scheme.

Mentees

To ensure that we are able to focus this year’s scheme on those with the greatest current need for support, we invite applications from those that have completed their first year of an LLB or second year of a non-qualifying undergraduate degree (or equivalent if you are on a different route into law).

We do not place any upper age or experience limit on those able to apply.

Mentees must be an LYLG member to partake as a mentee in the Scheme. If you are not already an LYLG member, please Join Here.

Diversity and Inclusion

LYLG is committed to promoting diversity and inclusion across our platform as we recognise it is fundamental to ensure that the legal profession is accessible for all.

We welcome and encourage individuals from all backgrounds to apply to take part in the LYLG Mentor Scheme: Inspire and Be Inspired. We request diversity and inclusion data in the application forms in order to make a more impactful match and providing this information is completely voluntary. We seek to create a real opportunity for aspiring lawyers to start forming strong legal connections and reduce societal barriers.

How to apply?

Please complete either a ‘Mentee Application‘ or a Mentor Application and return this to committee@lylg.org.uk specifying whether you are applying as a mentee or mentor in the subject line of your email.

If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to get in touch with us.
